Tea plantations of Uji province has recently become part of Japanese cultural heritage.

On April 24, 2015 Agency for Cultural Affairs of Japan, for the first time, added to the list of cultural heritage of the country’s 18 articles from 24 prefectures.

Among them are 8 known traditional green tea manufacturer areas situated in the south of Kyoto Prefecture: Uji, Ujitawara, Wazuka, Kizugawa, Yawata, Joyo, Kyotanabe and Minamiyamashiro.

These places will be included in the tourist route called “800 years history of Japanese green tea journey.”

It is believed that the origin of local tea cultivation belongs in the Kamakura Period (1185-1333), and the methods for making well known green tea varieties like Gyokuro and Sencha were first invented there.
